FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for visiting our store. We appreciate your business.
We are still in business and shipping 3 days a week. All planes in stock. If your shipping label is printed your order is on its way even if the USPS tracking says the post office has not received your package. We are using UPS for some orders.
Our drop down menu price includes both the plane kit and shipping for both domestic and foreign shipping rates. We added the cost of the kit and the cost of shipping together so you will know the total price it will cost to have the plane delivered to your home without having to put the plane in a cart and then go to the cart page and calculate shipping. We don't make money off the shipping costs. Customs or tariff charges are the responsibility of the buyer since they vary by country.
Recently USPS has not been tracking and has greatly increased their postal rates. We are shipping more packages by UPS depending on your location and what you order. If your package tracking says your label is printed your order is on its way even if tracking says it has not received by the post office. The USPS tracking leaves much to be desired.
If we can save you money by sending several planes in one box or sending several boxes together we will and give you a refund for the difference. You can also contact us for a bulk postage rate and we will help you order. We can usually save you on shipping expenses when you choose our buy 5 get one free orders.

The expected time for delivery listed on our shipping drop down menus is provided by the postal service but is not guaranteed. Rarely is a kit lost in the mail but we do see some kits take longer than expected be delivered.

We ship planes in a plain brown box to help them move quickly through the postal system. We appreciate the business from our friends all over the world.
Returns or replacement policy
Contact us first by E-mail and discuss with us any problems or concerns and get authorization for a return or replacement. We try to check the E-mails every buisness day and should get back with you in a timely manner. We want you to be happy with your plane and are willing to work with you.
All returns must be returned in an undamaged complete kit if you want a refund. Since this is a kit of parts, any partially built planes cannot be returned for a refund. If there is a defect in materials or parts missing please contact us and we will help you get what you need to finish your plane.
Please follow the instructions. If you have not followed the building instructions or modified the plane or not used the electronics, glues, tape or laminates described or if you have painted before lamination, we will negotiate with you but are not responsible to fix any problem that may result. If it is our fault we pay shipping if it is your fault you pay shipping.
It is our policy that you either need to mail the plane back to us or send photographs showing the present condition of your build if we are replacing defective parts at our cost. If you need replacement parts E-mail us and tell us your zip code and we will give you a price for the parts including shipping.
Can I be a distributor of your planes?
We have RC flyers who stock our planes and resale them to their friends and local flyers. You already have our buy 5 and get one free offer that you don't have to negotiate for. What many flyers have done to motivate their friends and neighbors to come fly with them is to order airplane kits then order motors, ESCs, props, and servos and add them to to kits to increase profits. Some flyers even like to build the planes for their local flyers to help them get started. Some flyers do some trading or earn a little more for their building time and efforts. Don't start building planes for others until you are a proficient builder and flyer. You need to be able to flight test the planes you are building. One of the best ways to build a local flying group is to help them get planes that will last from Crashtesthobby which makes the toughest planes on the planet.
Do you donate planes for fly-ins, schools, events and research?
We get many requests to sponsor flyers or donate planes for fly-ins, schools, clubs, individual research and marketing. We are supportive of the events and projects but we can't afford to fill all the requests. We still have to pay for the planes. To be fair with everyone, we started the buy 5 get one free for anyone and everyone. This way we can reward the customers who support us. Many people and groups take advantage of this offer. We have given away hundreds of planes to our loyal customers. We have one school that has purchased over 100 planes and has gotten more than 20 free planes for their students. Some clubs have also gone over the 100 plane mark now too and also received over 20 free planes. Many smaller groups are still ordering 5 or 10 planes and still getting rewarded. We have many customers who use the buy 5 get one free without a club or organization. Details of how to use the buy 5 get one free offer are on our discount page.
Don't miss out on the discounted 3 packs of Assassins, Rebels and Widowmakers and the two packs of Scythes that will also save you money on smaller orders.
We look at all multi plane orders to see if we can save you money on shipping. We will do our best to get the best shipping rates we can for your order. This has resulted in big savings for our foreign customers. We don't make any profit on shipping charges.
There are other ways we save you money that may not be so obvious. Look at our parts lists at the top of our website. We give you links of where you can get prices lower than the wholesale prices your local hobby store has to pay for the merchandise they sell. We have intentionally found lower cost motors and ESCs and have designed planes to use them. While many dealers are trying to get you to pay $20-$50 for a motor we show you how to get the motors for less than $8.
Buying durable planes that will last is a great way to save money. One of the major problems for school groups and newer flyers is all their planes are always broken. Our planes are designed to take a beating and keep on flying. All of our planes are cut from 100% EPP foam which is like cutting planes from Nerf foam. Watch the video at the bottom of our home page where we hit a brick wall with an Assassin multiple times and it survives. Read our reviews and see what people are saying about our service and the durability of our planes.
What comes in the kits?
We have put a list of what is included in each kit on each plane’s individual information page. The pictures on our home page show the finished kits that have been painted or had trim tape applied. We do not include radios, speed controls, servos, Extreme Tape, glue or paint in any kits. We do include all of the foam parts, motor mounts, horns and linkages, shock cord and enough laminate to finish your plane in each kit that uses laminate. On some kits we include specific wood parts related to their design. We give you links in our "Parts List" which is at the top of every page, to where to buy the additional electronic parts you will need at the same prices we pay.
Why are your instructions on line?
We give more information on line than we can with printed instructions. Watch our building videos and you will be able to not only see how but get an explanation of why we build the way we do. If something changes we can update the information and everyone gets the information immediately even if they bought their kit months ago. We have made our instructions PDF files that can be downloaded to your computer, smart phone or tablet so you don't have to be online to have the instructions. Some I-Phone or Apple tablets do not run Flash-player (or a similar PDF program) but the instructions will download as normal.
Why don't you sell the electronics and radios?
We specialize in cutting EPP foam. We are the plane kit manufacturer. Our goal is to help you get the most for your money. We have given you links in our "Parts List" (at the top of this page) to high performance low cost parts that have proven themselves in combat. You can get the components cheaper than your local hobby shop has to pay for their wholesale price if you know where to look. If we buy the parts and resale them to you we have to charge you more than you have to spend if you order the parts yourself and we would be unable to offer a warranty or service on the parts.
Why don't you put wheels on your planes?
Most flyers around the world do not have a designated flying field or a runway. Our planes are designed to be flown most anywhere over any terrain. They can land on uneven ground on most any solid surface including snow without being damaged. You don't need a flying field or a runway to fly a Crashtesthobby plane. (Watch our videos.)
We are believers that a simple solid structure lasts longer and will have a longer life. We prefer not to add the weight and drag of wheels and the wheel support structure. The weight and drag of landing gear is significant and will affect the way the plane glides and how much power it takes to fly it. In an accident the wheels tend to catch and flip the plane or tear off and puncture the plane which causes damage to the plane. Our goal is to produce planes that fly great, will have a long life and are trouble free.
Why do you use fiberglass spars instead of carbon fiber spars?
We do use flat carbon spars in the Assassin, Rebels, Widowmaker, Scythe and Pelican and in the tails of the Storm Chaser and Albatross. We found that in the smaller combat planes flat carbon spars work well because they can flex in one direction and still give strength in another direction. Carbon fiber is stiffer than fiberglass but it is also more brittle and likely to shatter in our bigger planes in some configurations. The fiberglass spars are strong and much more durable in the longer lengths. The way we install the fiberglass spars in the bigger planes makes the planes very strong and stiff.
Carbon fiber has also been linked to interference with FPV radio transmission. If we use carbon fiber we try to keep our antennas away from the spars. For these reasons we have chosen to go with the fiberglass spars in our bigger planes.
Can I buy a ready to fly Crashtesthobby plane?
We only sell our products as un-assembled kits. We don't offer pre-built RTF (ready to fly) planes. We have tried to keep our kits simple to build and design them to last. We have learned that when someone doesn't build their own plane they don't know how to fix it. With a little basic knowledge you can get years of life out of our planes because of how we design them. We have many videos showing how to build your Crashtesthobby planes. Our planes are relatively easy to build because you are building with larger solid foam parts. I have not seen any other line of planes that will last longer than the planes from Crashtesthobby.
The colors you see on the planes on our site is either Fusion Paint for Plastics which you can apply before you laminate or colored packaging or holographic tape which you can apply on top of the laminate. Paint and tape does not come with the kits but is left up to each individual builder. Watch our building videos for more information.
How long have you been in business?
We have been cutting foam planes and flying wings for our local club since 1985. There were enough requests from outside the club, that we started selling publicly in 2005. We now have customers from all 50 states and all over the world in more than 50 countries.
Why should every flyer have a Crashtesthobby plane?
Imagine flying planes that don't need repair every time you crash. You will spend more time in the air and less time in the shop with our line of RC planes. Everyone needs a good old reliable Crashtesthobby plane in their car that they can fly on the windy days or over snow or rough ground when they can't fly their other planes. After a while you will find that you are flying your Crasthtesthobby back up planes more than you fly your regular planes because they are fun to fly, can be flown in more places and are not always broken.
Clubs like our planes for combat and pylon racing because our planes are designed to be the toughest planes on the planet. When your planes are this tough you fly different. Instead of trying to stay away from other flyers you can fly as a group which changes the way it feels to fly. Flying becomes a social event instead of a solo act.
We have a great line up of FPV planes that can suit both the beginner and advanced flyer. Our EPP FPV planes not only are durable but they are designed to protect your expensive FPV gear.
Our Albatross is the easiest RC trainer plane you can buy. It can take the abuse that a beginner will give it because it is cut from 100% EPP foam and a trainer that can survive the rough landings a beginner makes. It is designed to put its nose on the horizon and level its own wings without a flight stabilizer. Read this for more information.
Our flying wings are just plane fun!!!
There is something about flying a plane that can turn on a dime, fly above rough ground or over slopes and survive and survive rough flying and landing that makes them a great plane to own. You can stack flying wings like lumber in your trunk and they don't care. You can fly in formation, fly pylon races and combat and they dare you to do more. I have flown my flying wings more than any other planes I have ever owned because they keep on flying without any repair and they are high power to weight so they can do things most other planes can not do.
I remember a time we were headed to a major fly-in event, that was not supposed to be for flying wings but intended for larger quarter scale and sport planes. As we drove over the hill to where we could see the model airport, we could see more than a dozen flying wings in the air, most of which were planes from Crashtesthobby. When questioned why they were flying the wings instead of the sport planes they said it was too windy with a cross wind across the runway so they were flying the wings until the wind changed. It is always nice to have a plane in your trunk that can fly in these conditions.
Have you ever listened to sport flyers with gas or glow engines discuss the price of their planes. I heard one flyer say his plane only cost $7200.00 and I am sure that other planes on that flight line cost more. You will only pay $60 to $120 for most of the planes we sell. We have designed them to use inexpensive radio and batteries and we include clear laminate which will save you even more.
Why should I buy from Crashtesthobby?
1. We design and manufacture great flying planes from solid EPP foam that last.
2. We design planes by motor size so you can share the electronics you buy between your planes.
3. We give you links for places to buy electronics at super deal prices.
4. We offer Buy 5 get one free!!! Check out all of our "Discount" options.
5. We include laminate in our kits that use laminate. This saves you $10-$30 per plane.
6. Our building instructions and web site information are designed to teach you about the hobby.
7. We give great customer service.
