I designed a better 5mm prop adapter!!!
I couldn't find a 5mm prop adapter I liked so I designed the Crashtesthobby X-TREME 4 bolt Prop Saver. We like it so much we are manufacturing them for 5mm, 4mm and 3mm motor shaft sizes. The 3mm can be drilled out with a 1/8" bit to a 3.17mm shaft size. These prop adapters are built Crashtesthobby tough!!! I'm installing them on all of my planes.
This prop adapter can use one or two O-rings. They work great spinning in either direction. Your prop and nut won't spin off with this design and you don't have to drill a big hole in your propeller.
This prop adapter helps reduce motor vibration and helps to prevent your prop from damaging your plane. It protects your motor shaft and acts as a spacer between the motor bell and the prop. The O-rings stay on and don't spin off because it has 4 contact points with the motor shaft.
We also have a 3 bolt version for 3 baded props with a 3mm shaft size that can be drilled to a larger size. Each prop adapter comes with a 2.5mm Allen wrench and two heavy duty O-rings. Please read information below for instructions for safe use.

You should upgrade to the Crashtesthobby's X-TREME Prop Adapters.
1. Our prop adapters are machined from a polished hardened aircraft aluminum alloy designed to take abuse and survive. They are available for 3mm, 4mm and 5mm standard size shaft sizes. The 3mm can be drilled out with a 1/8" bit to a 3.17mm shaft size.
2. The hardened aluminum body of our prop adapter has a bigger diameter so there are 2x to 3x more threads to secure the 4 steel bolts to get a solid grip on your prop shaft which helps prevent your bolts from stripping out or coming loose.
3. The large flat sides of our prop saver body gives a larger flat surface for the prop to rest on to help to stabilize the prop and decrease vibration. This design will help to stabilize your prop so it is less likely to hit your plane but still provide protection and shock absorption. It works in both the pusher and puller prop configurations without prop modification on most sizes and designs of propellers. The diameter is big enough that the prop will still be stable without the prop spacer inserts that come with many propellers.
4. This prop saver body is designed to go from the bell of the motor to the prop with no gaps. It acts as a spacer to maintain proper distance between the motor bell and the propeller. This is particularly helpful when you have accidents on pusher prop configurations. The taller body gives more support to the prop shaft helping to prevent your motor shaft from bending or sliding through the motor in an accident or rough day to day use.
5. Our prop saver has 4 strong steel Allen's head bolts instead of 2 small Phillip's screws to help to anchor down the prop from different angles decreasing vibration and making it less likely to spin on the shaft or the prop to come off the motor. The larger heads on the longer 3mm Allen's head bolts help to keep the O-rings on the prop adapter. This prop adapter comes with an Allen wrench for tightening the bolts. We recommend you also use non-permanent thread lock or "Lock Tite" to keep the bolts tight.
6. We have chosen M3 (3 mm) thread 12mm long 12.9 grade black steel hex head bolts with larger threads for more gripping power. The black steel bolts are less brittle than similar sized stainless steel bolts. We chose a thread that is easy to find if you want to use longer or shorter bolts. You will use a 2.5 mm Allen wrench (not a screw driver) to tighten this prop adapter/saver allowing you to tighten it down with more power. We include a 2.5mm Allen wrench with the prop saver. The Allen's head bolt design are much less likely to strip out compared to the Phillip's head screws used on most prop adapters. It only takes a few seconds with an Allen wrench to transfer this adapter from one motor to another.
7. We provide two strong size 210 O-rings to secure your prop with this design. This design can have as much as a 90-degree prop rotation on impact and still maintain control of the propeller on a powerful motor. The O-rings are not across the middle of the prop but out farther to give more stabilization. If you are using a small prop on a smaller plane you may choose to use just one O-ring.
8. The 4 bolt design also allows you to use a rubber band instead of O-rings. You can use a #64 rubber band and stretch it tight and making several passes over the prop from different directions. The multiple windings of a rubber band add multiple layers of strength and may surprisingly be the strongest method for larger front mount motors. Make sure you balance the way you wrap the rubber band so it doesn't cause vibration. Change the rubber band occasionally to make sure it is in good condition.
9. You won't have your prop nut spin off with our design. There is no prop nut to unscrew!!! I have seen many props and nose cones lost after they spun off collet style prop adapters. Our design works no matter which way the motor is spinning. Most bigger motors use a nut or nose cone on a screw to hold the propeller on the motor. The traditional design only works if the motor is turning in one direction which is usually designed for a puller prop configuration. If the motor spins the opposite direction, the prop and nose cone can easily spin off because the direction of the spin for a pusher prop is loosening not tightening the nut on the shaft.
10. You don't have to drill a big hole in your prop. Many adapters that come with the bigger motors make you drill a 8mm to 10mm hole through the middle of your prop which will weaken your prop and may be off center causing vibration in the prop. Our CTH Prop Saver is easier to set up and only requires you to drill out the prop to the size of the motor shaft which is much smaller, easier and less likely to damage the propeller and takes less propeller modification.
11. Our 3 bolt design is for three bladed propellers and works well with scale planes and quadcopters. A single O-ring is pulled down around the bolts from over the propeller. See pictures above.
Safety as in all things RC comes down to you and the way you set things up.
Use this prop adapter only on the size of shaft for which it was designed.
Some propellers may have a sharp edge close to the hub of the propeller that could possibly cut an O-ring. Because of the wide variety of propellers available on the market you may need to adapt your O-ring configuration to your propeller design by crossing the O-rings rather than having them parallel to each other. Make sure the sharp trailing edge of your prop isn't going to cut your O-rings.
Put a drop of thread lock in each threaded hole and screw in your M3 bolts. Slide the CTH X-treme prop adapter on the motor shaft so it is touching the bell of the motor and tighten it firmly with an Allen wrench. These prop adapters are tough but don't strip the threads by extreme over-tightening. Using your Allen wrench tighten the bolts onto the motor shaft.
You can get replacement O-rings at Lowes, Home Depot and other hardware stores. Our prop adapters are compatible with 1/8" wall I.D. 3/4" or I.D. 7/8" O-rings. Also known by sizes 210, or 211 with a 0.13" thickness. We include size 210 in the kit.
We recommend you use O-rings or rubber bands around all 4 bolts to hold your prop on the motor. A pusher prop is trying to push tighter on the motor. A puller prop is trying to fly away from the motor. We wanted a prop adapter that excels in both configurations. The 4 bolt and double O-ring design offers several prop protection options.
There are many variations of how you can secure your prop to our prop adapter. You can put 2 smaller O-rings on in a crossing pattern or a parallel pattern depending on the design of the propeller. You can also use a rubber band as long as you wrap it super tight, make sure it is balanced and in good condition. A tight #64 rubber band is actually stronger than most O-ring set ups because of the multi-layers of elastic. You need to use adequate retaining O-rings or rubber bands to keep your prop from coming off your motor. The general rule is to use twice as many O-rings as you need and use at least 2 O-rings at all times.
If there is any sign that the prop adapter is not adequately holding the prop in test full throttle runs, discontinue use of the prop saver and contact us at this website. Some of the bigger motors create so much thrust that the O-rings are not strong enough to hold the prop against your prop adapter in a puller configuration. Don't fly any plane that is having unusual prop noise or vibration using these prop adapters.
Make sure your O-rings or rubber bands are in good condition especially if you are using these prop adapters in a puller configuration. The sun's ultraviolet rays will dry and crack O-rings and rubber bands over time. Do not used dry or cracked O-rings or rubber bands. Replace your O-rings if there is any question of their condition.
We have not had this prop adapter/saver come off any motor in testing when it is installed as described, that doesn't mean it isn't possible. We recommend you use Lock Tite or other non-permanent thread lock adhesive and tighten the bolts securely during installation and recheck with the Allen wrench to make sure the bolts are still tight when you change props. Never stand in line with a spinning propeller and use safe practices when the prop is spinning.
Foreign customers please order your CTH Prop Adapters at the same time as you order your kits. Foreign shipping is expensive and we want to save you money.
