NOTE!!!! We have a new beta test wing in the Albatross with ailerons kit. It does not need to be hinged and laminated!!! It has the same airfoil and flies about the same, only the construction method has changed. The new wing is cut from a heavier foam and has the ailerons pre-cut in the wing. Even though the new wing is cut from heavier foam it weighs less because it isn't laminated. Building is simple and faster. There is a new build video for this wing on the Albatross Build Instructions page. We are very excited about this wing. It flies FANTASTIC!
The Albatross comes in two versions. These are the standard Albatross with the polyhedral wing and an Albatross with ailerons. Both planes have the option of pod mount or nose mount motor. The 46″ Albatrosses are made out of the same tough EPP foam as our combat wings making them some of the most durable trainers on the market. They have a solid EPP foam fuselage that acts as a shock absorber and will not crush. All of your radio is buried in the foam to offer excellent protection. They can survive accidents that other planes made from other kinds of foam can not and will not. Watch the videos.
The Albatross with the 46" polyhedral wing may be the best slow flyer on the planet! It can turn itself right side up, level the wings, and put its nose on the horizon without pilot input. It has a unique slanted motor angle and polyhedral wing that make the magic happen. It flies just as well with the optional pod mounted motor configuration which protects the motor and prop. New flyers can fly this plane. It makes a great FPV plane because it is self stabilizing and has long flights without having to carry a big battery. It can fly in more wind than any other slow flyer we have flown. We recommend it for flyers who are having trouble staying in the air, night flying and flying in parks where you need a quiet plane. The Albatross with the polyhedral wing is designed to use the same low cost motor, speed control and servos as the high performance Assassins and Widowmakers. The Albatross flies well at 1/3 to 1/2 throttle giving long relaxed flight times. This is a great night flyer with LED lights. It is our most popular trainer sized airplane. It is relaxed and fun to fly.
The 46" Albatross with ailerons is a great flying low speed 4 channel plane. It has a new wing that is cut from a heavier foam. Ailerons are already attached to the wing making it simple to build and fly and one of the toughest planes on the planet. It is designed for the sport flyer who wants a durable more aggressive slow flying plane. It is a great plane for FPV. The airfoil used on both wings is amazingly efficient but still able to carry a load of FPV gear and a larger battery
We are now including a wood motor mount pod in all the Albatross kits. The pod raises the motor above the front of the wing and gets it off the nose of the plane. The pod motor should be mounted so it is aimed parallel with the top of the fuselage but points at the LEFT front corner of the fuselage to compensate for prop torque. The motor can still be mounted on the nose where it should point down and to the RIGHT for those who like the nose mount.
The pod is a single light weight straight grain wood post that should be put in behind the front dowel for the wing. The simplest way to install the pod is to poke a hole for the pod with a Phillips screwdriver and pushing the point of the square pod post down the hole. We are only using a top and bottom screw on the 2812 motor to secure the motor to the pod.
Any of you who want to retro-fit a pod on your Albatross or Pelican can easily do it. One of our customers predicted that in 1 year 80% of all the Albatross and Pelican kits will be built with the pod mount because of how much better it protects the motor and prop and because it leaves the nose free for cameras and FPV.
